Abstract:
Pre-Construct Archaeological Services Ltd carried out a pre-determination archaeological evaluation on land to the northwest of Newton on Trent, in the West Lindsey district of Lincolnshire. A geophysical surveycarried out in summer 2015 had identified a small number of potential archaeological features. Possible evidence of medieval ridge and furrow agriculture was also interpreted across most of the site. Ten 25m long evaluation trenches were excavated, targeted on those features identified by the geophysical survey and to provide a representative assessment of the whole site. Archaeological features were positively identified in only one trench, located in the northwest corner of the site. The identified features consisted of a backfilled ditch and a smaller pit or possible ditch terminal. Both features contained significant amounts of Romano-British pottery and carbonised plant remains typical of the period and in sufficient quantity to indicating crop processing probably took place nearby. The ditch also contained fragments of ceramic roof tile and brick. Collectively the features and their associated finds probably indicate an occupation site of the 2nd century AD or later, engaged in agricultural production and associated with at least one brick and tile-constructed building. No other archaeological features were positively identified by the evaluation. The presence of ridge and furrow agriculture could not be demonstrated as no furrows were clearly definable.
