Abstract:
This archaeological desk-based and historic building assessment was commissioned as part of the consideration to develop the land at no. 333 Banbury Road, Oxford, otherwise known as Summer Hill Villa or House. 333 Banbury Road is a building containing historical standing fabric of what has been described as a distinguished Summertown villa of the Regency period, with Italianate design. The structure is as such an undesignated heritage asset. The proposals aim to retain this old structure but to remove the 1950s addition that lies to the west. As such there is a visual impact on this heritage asset. A further building will be constructed on the southern side of the plot. There is a moderate to good potential for Palaeolithic remains related to the nationally significant Wolvercote Channel Deposits, to be situated within the development area. Features associated with locally significant Roman settlement of the area also have a moderate chance of being present. The removal of the 1950s building and the erection of a further building will thus have an impact on the underlying clay and potential river terrace deposits.
