Abstract:
There are few archaeological monuments in the area surrounding the development site; a small number of prehistoric and Roman artefact findspots are recorded along the coast. There are no post-Roman sites recorded in the vicinity, although it is likely that modern villages originated as small farmsteads. There are documentary records of a small chapel at Higher Tregantle Farm less than 200m from the site; the base of a 13th century stone cross remains at the modern farm. Agriculture has dominated the Rame Peninsula throughout the medieval and post-medieval periods, with tourism now a growing source of revenue. The proposed development site has been subject to preceding geophysical survey, followed by targeted trial excavation, which identified the presence of two enclosures in the northwest corner of the site, and a series of ditches indicating phases of activity. Further ditches have been revealed in the southeast field of the proposed development zone. No useful dating evidence was recovered from any of the archaeologically significant features. Two excavation areas targeted the enclosures in the northwest and the ditches to the southeast, and the outlying ditches around the enclosures were investigated by eight smaller trenches. The landscape was agricultural, with the enclosures and ditches forming probable prehistoric field boundaries and animal enclosures.
