Abstract:		 Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by The Square Chapel to undertake a programme of archaeological trial trenching at the Square Chapel, Halifax, West Yorkshire (NGR SE 09621 25037). Calderdale Metropolitan District Council has granted planning permission for an extension to the Arts Centre (Square Chapel), including alterations to the Piece Hall and formation of new access and parking area. The consent includes a condition requiring archaeological works (planning ref. 09/00287/FUL, condition 2). A specification for an archaeological evaluation by trial trenching was prepared by the West Yorkshire Archaeology Advisory Service (WYAAS) on behalf of the local planning authority (WYAAS 2012). The evaluation involved the excavation of five trial trenches positioned to test for the survival and extent of burials, and the potential presence of a graveyard boundary.
