Abstract:		 Pre-Construct Archaeology Ltd (PCA) was appointed by Forman Homes Ltd to undertake an archaeological evaluation on the land currently occupied by the Granby Gardens, Garden Centre at Ludgershall, Wiltshire.The archaeological investigation was conducted in respect of a planning application proposing a residential development on the site and the results of the evaluation were required to inform determination of the archaeological implications of the proposed development. This report details the results and working methods of the archaeological evaluation, which comprised the excavation of eight evaluation trenches located within open fields located to the south and east of the Garden Centre. Work was undertaken between the 23rd of March and 26th of September 2014. The evaluation has confirmed the findings of the earlier DBA: - in that the site has remained as undeveloped agricultural fields for a significant period of time. The only archaeological feature present on site was an east to west linear recorded at 0.46m (Below Ground Level) in Trench 2, which has been interpreted as the remnant of a post-medieval field drain lifted during the 20th century. Trench 2 also contained the only archaeological find, a pre-historic worked flint fragment retrieved towards the base of the subsoil layer. The lack of a true subsoil layer in trenches 6 to 8 is possibly the result of site stripping whilst the site was in use by Garden Centre. No other evidence for human activity was identified within the other 7 trenches.
