Abstract: |
Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by QinetiQ to conduct an archaeological watching brief during the construction of a new batching plant and access area, which lay in the western section of the Boscombe Airfield, near Amesbury, Wiltshire. A previous geophysical survey used a Bartington Grad601-2 dual sensor system over grids 20m x 20m to cover approximately 1.8ha. It identified possible linear anomalies perhaps representing potential archaeological features as well as the remains of a possible stone structure. The watching brief revealed that the proposed batching plant location lay within an area of previously disturbed ground, and that the previously identified structure as a possible post-war radar/signal installation. No other archaeological features or deposits were observed at foundation level, although a number of modern services and natural geological features were noted within the southern and northern areas of the site. |
