Abstract:
A programme of archaeological excavation was carried out by Headland Archaeology in advance of a proposed extension to Brenkley Lane Opencast Surface Mine, Tyne and Wear. The location was the site of an Iron Age enclosed settlement site. The removal of topsoil from 5.2ha of land was monitored in order to expose the full extent of the features. The majority of the features, relating to occupation deposits, centred on two main areas, both to the eastern side of the site. The first of these areas included a multi-phase spread of ring gullies, pits and post-holes enclosed within substantial inner and outer rectilinear ditches. The second main area included further linear ditches that enclosed a significant spread of occupation deposits comprising further ring gullies and postholes. Further features were recorded to the west side of the excavation area including the continuation of one of the enclosure ditches as well as two subsidiary ditches and a small number of features including a possible kiln and a number of curvilinear gullies, pits and postholes. Finds from the site along with radiocarbon dates suggest the site was dated to the Iron Age/Romano-British period although some bronze Age pottery was also recovered from the site.
