Abstract:
Archaeological recording at St Michael's Church, Kingsteignton, Devon, was undertaken as a condition of a faculty for alterations, including the demolition of part of the west wall of the north aisle for the construction of a new boiler house and disabled toilets. During the late Saxon period Kingsteignton was a royal possession, the chief administrative centre for Teignbridge Hundred. The church may have originated as a Saxon minster. The present building is a superficially regular structure, apparently of late-medieval date; however, despite its uniformity, the church has clearly developed over a long period by accretion around an earlier core. A surprising amount of instructive early fabric survives in the south aisle, including evidence of lean-to structures and doorways in the western bays which, in a larger church with a known monastic origin, there would be no difficulty in identifying as potentially those of a cloister. It is suggested that the Saxon minster church might have continued after the conquest as a Norman monastery, but that it did not survive the donation of its income to the cathedral of Old Sarum in 1122 to endow the 'Golden Prebend' of Teignton Regis. The demolition of the medieval west wall of the north aisle revealed reused fragments of an earlier newel stair, perhaps relating to a lost tower or turret preceding the present late-medieval or post-medieval western tower. It is suggested that an 11th or 12th century cruciform church was remodelled to conform to a late-medieval 'ideal' of regularity and homogeneity.
