Abstract:
Windout Farm lies to the south-south-west of Tedburn St Mary village. The archaeological works were commissioned by the current owners of the farmhouse to inform a possible application for planning permission and listed building consent to undertake alterations with the aim of improving the relationship between the house and the garden. Windout Farmhouse is of medieval date and originally had an open hall at the centre with a storeyed element jettying into it at the south end. These rooms seem to have been the high-status rooms during the early history of the house. The north end of the building was improved in the 16th or early 17th century by the addition of plaster ceilings and a sgraffito decorated fireplace, perhaps when this end of the house was first storeyed. These features suggest that the north end of the house was now the high-status area. The house was further improved in the 17th century by the addition of a new kitchen wing at the south-eastern corner. This was of two storeys from its first construction and was perhaps contemporary with the enclosure of the open hall. The kitchen wing has a very large fireplace, filling the entire eastern bay, with a high, wide internal compartment, possibly designed to allow the smoking of cured meats. The survival of two ovens, including a north Devon ceramic cloam oven is of particular interest, as this lies at the extreme edge of the known distribution of these ovens in the county.
