Abstract:
Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by The Relph Ross Partnership Limited, on behalf of Mr and Mrs J Holt, to undertake an archaeological watching brief on land at the rear of 7 - 11 Brown Street, Salisbury, Wiltshire (NGR) 414620, 130000. The work was carried out between the 18th to the 19th of March 2015. The Site has been proposed for the demolition and redevelopment of the area comprised of the demolition of former commercial buildings at the rear of 7-11 Brown Street and the construction of five new dwellings within approximately the same footprint as the previous buildings. A formal planning application (ref S/2010/1345) and Conservation Area Consent (ref S/2010/1346) had been submitted and an archaeological condition (Condition 4) was placed on the approved notice. The terms of the Condition required a phased programme of work. This comprised of monitoring the demolition of two standing buildings; excavation of two archaeological evaluation trenches; contingency for area excavation, dependent of the results of the evaluation; and an archaeological watching brief to observe all supplementary ground works, principally the digging of service trenches. The majority of the cable trench revealed similar deposits that were seen within Trench 2 which type characterise many of the 'back lands' within medieval Salisbury and have been encountered in recent excavations in a number of other Chequers. In the north-western end of the cable trench, a sequence of partially robbed-out walls was identified. Given the fact that these walls were found to be on the same alignment as one of the modern property boundary wall, it seems likely that these walls are the remains of one of the old tenement boundary walls that originally divided up the Black Horse Chequer.
