Abstract: |
Pre-Construct Archaeology Ltd (PCA) was appointed by CgMs Consulting to undertake an archaeological evaluation on land south-west of Ludgershall, Wiltshire. The Site is the subject of a housing development proposal for which a planning application is to be prepared for submission to the Local Planning Authority Wiltshire County Council. A total of 34no 30m X 2m trenches were proposed, arranged over the Site area and targeting possible archaeological resources identified by geophysical survey. A total of 33 trenches were opened with trench 23 being left due to the presence of a mains foul pipe. The evaluation was completed largely in keeping with the Written Scheme of Investigation. The evaluation revealed moderately significant archaeology in the east of the site in the form the ditch, probably dating to the Roman period. A number of other features were also identified, such as Trench 3 and 9, all appeared modern in date and do not represent any significant archaeology. |
