Abstract: |
This report presents the results of an archaeological evaluation undertaken by AOC Archaeology Group on behalf of Persimmon Homes and Avant Homes, on a 15ha land plot located to the south of Johnston Loch, Gartcosh, North Lanarkshire. The evaluation was undertaken as the initial part of a phased programme of works required as a condition of the planning consent for the development. The evaluation consisted of the machine trenching of 6,360 m², 8% of the available development area. A total of 8,000 m2 was originally required; however the combination of extensive marsh land situated along the northern boundary, and live services reduced the area that could feasibly be evaluated. The evaluation was undertaken in an area of sloping, improved pasture. This had been extensively drained with modern ceramic pipes placed at 3.0 m intervals across the site. These drains all appeared to run into the Johnston Loch. Neither significant archaeological features nor artefacts were encountered, and no further archaeological works are recommended, although this will have to be confirmed by the Stirling Council Archaeology Officer, advisor to North Lanarkshire Council. |
