Abstract: |
A 19th-century outbuilding at Old Matford, an important Elizabethan house on the outskirts of Exeter was examined prior to alterations in 2012-13. The works to the site boundary walls discovered evidence for an arched gateway or frontispiece to the forecourt of the mansion, probably in Renaissance style and flanked by columns. The outbuilding was constructed in the late 19th-century against an earlier wall which showed clear evidence of demolished structures pre-dating the present outbuilding. It is conjectured that the house was reduced in size by demolition during the 18th century. |
