Abstract:
A negative watching brief on a single house development with associated services. The house construction itself was not monitored due to a swimming pool (now dis-used) which had been constructed on the new dwellings footprint so any archaeological remains would have been destroyed. The watching brief was aimed on the excavations for the associated services. A 13th/ 14th century corn grinding mill once stood on the site with subsequent use as a mill as late as the 1940's. Therefore the main objective of the watching brief was to ascertain if any Medieval / Post-Medieval archaeological remains connected with the mill survived, or earlier Prehistoric activity due to its location within the Trent valley. The results were negative with the whole area destroyed with brick /concrete rubble extending under the top-soil possibly by the latest development of a 1928 mill built for production of materials associated with the ceramics industry.
