Abstract:
Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by Lafarge Cement UK to undertake three phases of archaeological evaluation ahead of proposed quarry extensions (Limestone Quarry Phase 1, Limestone Quarry Phase 2 and Shale Quarry Phase 1). The Limestone Quarry Phase 1 evaluation was centred on NGR SK 08694 48046. Apart from the recently infilled remains of a small, historically mapped, quarry pit at the northwestern extent of the Site, no archaeological features or finds were identified during the evaluation. Indentations in the local surface topography examined were confirmed by the trial trenching as limestone fissures. The Limestone Quarry Phase 2 extension was centred at SK 08800 48100. No archaeological features or finds were identified during the evaluation, suggesting that the archaeological potential of the Site is negligible. The fieldwork demonstrated that modern soil material had been deposited on top of the topsoil across the eastern half of the Site in recent decades, which LaFarge Cement confirmed subsequent to the investigation. The Shale Quarry Phase 1 extension was centred on 407200, 349910. No significant archaeological features or finds were recorded during the evaluation and only relatively modern disturbance, in the form of agricultural field drainage systems, were observed and noted.
