Abstract: Geophysics, test pits and evaluation trenches revealed a 1 hectare Roman site.Later soil dumping over the area obscured much detail. Comparing test pits with the more usual machining down to archaeology then hand digging showed that the latter missed some 85% of the finds. This may have implications for evaluation by excavation in general.
