Abstract:
Pre-Construct Archaeology Limited was commissioned to undertake building recording of the former Bishop Wood's Almshouses, prior to their proposed external and internal alteration. The almshouses were built to accommodate ten elderly widows during the late 17th century. The almshouses were altered and repaired on many occasions in the past, a chapel was added around 1845, a new scullery built during the second half of the 19th century and the oak roofs were repaired. The restoration works of c.1935 entailed the integration of the former ten tenements into five units, internal works and the re-fenestration of the building. Later works carried out during 1985 resulted in a remodelling of the 1930s internal arrangements, remedial repairs and the addition of a new pitched roof and brick gable end to the northern range
