Abstract:
Pre-Construct Archaeology Limited was commissioned to undertake a programme of historic building recording at the Keston Centre (former Downhills Central School), Keston Road, Haringey, prior to its demolition. The former Downhills Central School was erected for the Tottenham Education Committee to the designs of G.E.T. Laurence, a prolific local architect who, working with the London School Board, specialised in the construction of school buildings, particularly in the Tottenham and Edmonton area, at the turn of the 20th century. Architects plans (for drainage) were drawn up in c.1911, although it appears that the school was not completed until some years later, following the passing of the Education Act of 1918, which led to the Tottenham Education Committee opening three selective central schools, namely Downhills, Down Lane and Risley Avenue. Downhill Central School, designed to provide vocational tuition for 400 boys and 400 girls, was opened on Wednesday 1st October, 1919
