Abstract:
A desk-based assessment had identified the area as potentially including part of the site of a medieval castle and remnants of domestic plots along a medieval street frontage. An 18th or 19th-century buried soil found in subsequent test pits had raised the possibility that pockets of medieval or earlier archaeological remains may have survived extensive Victorian and later demolition and redevelopment. Excavations revealed 19th and 20th-century foundations cut into 19th and 20th-century demolition and levelling layers, which themselves overlay remnants of a buried soil of the 18th or 19th century. The remains of a clay and concrete-lined tank, probably associated with the Victorian Castlefields Lace Mill, were revealed. The tank had been cut through earlier 19th-century levelling layers, and was filled in during the late 19th or early 20th century. A trench in the medieval street frontage area showed that 20th-century redevelopment, during the building of the Eagle Centre, had entirely removed the foundations and cellars of 19th and earlier 20th-century buildings on the site. Three pits, dated to the 19th or early 20th century, had also been heavily truncated by later demolition and redevelopment. The watching brief during redevelopment works identified no archaeological remains earlier than the Victorian period.
