Abstract: 1.2 Five evaluation trenches were excavated up to 2.00m below current ground level, in order to ascertain the archaeological potential of the site and the extent of past truncation, as well as assisting in the design of further archaeological work if required. Natural deposits of gravel were identified in four of the five trenches excavated, at varying levels of between 15.87m OD and 15.24m OD Deposits of sub-soil which yielded post-medieval cultural material were noted in three of the five trenches, sealing these gravel deposits. These deposits were cut by late post-medieval pits and wells associated with early buildings fronting onto Hackney Road and Gorsuch place. These were in turn capped by layers of modern made ground. No archaeological deposits or features pre-dating the post-medieval period were observed during the evaluation.
