Abstract: |
Archaeological Desk-Based Assessment of Land at Cotford St Luke, Bishop's Lydeard, Somerset. In 1897, Cotford became the location for a very large hospital for patients with mental illnesses, which finally closed in 1995. Surviving elements of the structure are now Grade II listed. The settlement which surrounds the former hospital site is almost entirely of post Second World War date. The site is currently a somewhat scrubby waste, with some woodland, and is entirely undeveloped. Historically, it lay close to the southern boundary of the large parish of Bishop's Lydeard; an early 10th century charter references the place-name Cotford. It is likely that there was a farm or small hamlet in existence there well before the Norman Conquest. The site includes, close to its northern boundary, the early 18th century Cotford Farm; it is highly likely that it stands on a far earlier site. The farm, demolished and removed during the establishment of the mental hospital, had a water mill driven from a leat running off the Halse Water stream. The area around the farm has been formally designated as a site of High Archaeological Potential, and roughly a quarter of this area intrudes into the north-west boundary of the development site. Just under 1.4km to the north of the site excavations have revealed potentially extensive and regionally important late Iron Age/Romano-British field systems and settlement. The Bishop's Lydeard charter contains at least one reference to a possible Bronze Age barrow, although the location is some distance from the site itself. |
