Abstract: |
Archaeological Services (ASWYAS) excavated the remains of a medieval enclosure and field system located to the north of the town of Halesworth in Suffolk. The remains feature a roughly square enclosure with an entrance to the northeast. The entrance may have been created after the infilling of part of the enclosure ditch in that area. Other phasing included internal divisions that segregated parts of the enclosure. Sherds of early medieval pottery, of 11th to 13th date recovered from ditch fills were used to date the site. WIthin the enclosure, a number of contemporary pits were also recorded. As well as the pottery, the excavation recovered samples that contained fuel waste, fired clay and animal bone that was interpreted as middening activity. |
