Abstract:
The watching brief followed a separate geophysical survey, which recorded no clear archaeological features, but found high ferrous levels. The site is on a ridge above the coast, open to a playing field containing a prehistoric standing stone, the Longstone, c35m south. The school was laid out in the later 20th century on post-medieval farmland. The Tithe map of c1840 depicts a field system here in course of development, with some boundaries represented by dashed lines, including one incorporating the Longstone. Before the mapping of c1880 this boundary was a built bank. The HER records barrows and several industrial sites in the vicinity. Watching brief conditions were good with fine weather throughout. Site fencing ensured the standing stone (13m outside it) was not damaged. The only features within the site were concrete rafts for cycle sheds or similar. The site was stripped to a depth of 0.3m, and foundation trenches were dug down from this around the building footprint and across its width. The ground was made up with large quantities of stony earth. Trenches exposed very similar stratigraphy. The redeposited layers differed, but held only modern artefacts and were probably spread in a single school ground landscaping scheme. Basal Layer 5, dark with charcoal, and mixed, may have been derived from nearby old industrial works. Another, Layer 4, reddish in colour, may be from mine spoil. No buried prehistoric remains were found, but they may survive elsewhere in the field.
