Abstract:
A programme of archaeological excavation was carried out in advance of a proposed housing development on land east of Morley Hill Farm, Hazlerigg, Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Two previous evaluations by AD Archaeology and Archaeological Services Durham University had identified a number of archaeological features indicating the presence of two Iron Age rectilinear enclosed settlements. Subsequently Headland Archaeology (UK) Ltd undertook a full excavation of approximately 2ha of land centred on these features. Three areas were excavated, Area A revealed a rectilinear enclosure ditch surrounding four roundhouses and a small number of pits. Area C revealed the partial remains of a rectilinear enclosure ditch, within which eight roundhouses and a number of pits and linear features were revealed. Outside this rectilinear ditch, in Area D a further 13 roundhouses were revealed along with concentrations of discrete features and linear features. Quantities of Iron Age and Romano-British pottery and animal bone were recovered during the excavation pointing to a mixture of domestic and food processing activities associated with the enclosed settlements.
