Abstract: |
An archaeological field evaluation was undertaken by Headland Archaeology (UK) Ltd on land at Derby Road, Aston-on-Trent, in response to a Condition attached to the consented planning application for the construction of a crematorium. The evaluation comprised the excavation of 11 trenches located to investigate magnetic anomalies identified by a geophysical survey. Trenching confirmed the presence of linear archaeological ditch features forming three probable enclosures. Discrete features hint at possible settlement activity. Dating evidence was scant but suggests a late prehistoric date for two of the enclosures. The results of the trial trenching broadly confirm the results of the geophysical survey and provide a good indication of the extent of the below ground archaeological resource. |
