Abstract:
Headland Archaeology (UK) Ltd undertook a geophysical (magnetometer) survey, covering approximately 18 hectares at Woolpit, Suffolk, to support a planning application (Ref DC/18/01279) for a new business park. Whilst the application site is located in a landscape of very high archaeological potential, no anomalies of definite archaeological potential have been identified by the survey and no anomalies have been identified to confirm the cropmarks (WPT024) which are recorded in the north-west of the site on the Suffolk Historic Environment Record. Two parallel linear anomalies in the north of the site are tentatively ascribed some archaeological potential, possibly associated with adjacent quarrying activity. Elsewhere, anomalies have been identified which reflect the former layout of the agricultural landscape as depicted on historical Ordnance Survey mapping. An isolated area of magnetic disturbance against the south-eastern site boundary probably locates a spread of demolition material associated with a former building which is also shown on 19th century maps whilst broad areas of magnetic disturbance correspond to former areas of gravel and/or clay extraction. Therefore, on the basis of the geophysical survey, the archaeological potential of the proposed development is assessed as low, with the parallel linear anomalies ascribed moderate archaeological potential.
