Abstract:
Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by QinetiQ to undertake an archaeological watching brief on land at Portsdown Technology Park, Cosham, Hampshire, National Grid Reference 464009, 106740. Planning permission (14/00193/FUL) was granted by Portsmouth City Council (PCC) for the construction of a single story building for use as a temporary office building. Previous works on the site identified limited archaeological remains of unknown date. The archaeological advisor to PCC advised that ground works should be monitored via an archaeological watching brief. The work took place on the 18th to 26th August, and 1st October 2014. The watching brief consisted of a c.0.07ha area mechanically stripped to the required construction level, and an adjacent 6.5m2 trench for a soakaway. A series of footings cut into the stripped area (up to 0.70m deep) were also observed. No archaeological features, deposits or finds were found during the course of this watching brief, though part of the stripped area was not of a depth sufficient to expose the natural chalk. The findings demonstrate extensive landscaping of the area in the recent past, which resulted in truncation of the underlying deposits, and potentially any buried archaeological remains.
