Abstract: |
The evaluation revealed peat and evidence of wet ground conditions. Peat deposit L1002, which was concentrated in the southern end of the site, and the underlying alluvial clays are likely to have formed in marshy conditions in the floodplain close to the River Flit prior to the historic drainage of the area. Historically, the former course of the river and a subsidiary channel can be seen running through this part of the site on the 1716 Clophill and Cainhoe Estate map (Fig. 5) and the 1828 Enclosure map (Fig. 6). The Enclosure map (Fig. 6) shows that the river has been diverted by this time, leaving the former course as a subsidiary channel. The channels through the site are subsequently absent on the 1883 OS map (Fig. 7), although traces remain to the west, most likely as part of the land drainage system. Geotechnical investigations on the site have identified peat deposits at greater depth overlying the terrace gravels, which may represent earlier periods of peat formation or the fills of the above former channels. Features were present in Trenches 2 and 3, and they comprised post holes and ditches. The features were undated or of post-medieval and modern date. The lack of earlier features will be related to the site's wet ground conditions. |
