Abstract:
In July 2016 Heritage Planning Services Ltd was commissionedil to undertake an archaeological Desk Based Assessment (DBA) focussed on the parish Church of St Mary, Edgeworth, Gloucestershire, GL6 7JQ. The DBA was commissioned to determine the known or potential presence of archaeology of the church and the significance of this. This document has identified that the church is located within an area of medium archaeological potential. The village was settled by the 11th century and there is potential for Saxon activity to be preserved within the church environs. Furthermore, there is potential for the village to have its origins in the Roman period, which may offer a reason for the establishment of a village in such a remote location, if the development of the site followed early occupation in a favourable area, with a good water source. Development appears to have continued into the Tudor period, with a precursor to the Manor House potentially preserved in the current basement of the 17th century structure.
