Abstract:
Archaeological monitoring and recording was undertaken by South West Archaeology Ltd. (SWARCH) at the request of Paul Baker, Building Surveyor for the National Trust (The Client), at Haglis Cottage, Killerton, Broadclyst, Devon during the installation of pipes for a biomass heating system. This work was undertaken by J. Bampton on 6th May 2017 in accordance with a Project Design drawn up in accordance with best practice and CIfA guidelines. Haglis Cottage is part of the Killerton Estate, located in the parish of Broadclyst and Hundred of Cliston. The current Killerton House was built in 1778, with gardens created by John Veitch in the 1770s. Haglis Cottage dates to c.1800 and was originally built as the home of the head gardener to the Killerton Estate. It is Grade II Listed cob cottage, built in the gothic style. A sub-rectangular triple ditched enclosure is located immediately east of the site; within a possible larger enclosure that appears to run into/across the site, is visible as a cropmark on aerial- and satellite imagery.
