Abstract:
No.143 Lower Clapton road is a grade II listed building dating from the late-eighteenth century. English Heritage compulsorily purchased the house in 1995 in order to carry out essential major structural repairs to the property. This report is based on English Heritage's own documentary research and analytical recording project which ran for the duration of the repair programme. The main aim of the research project was to elucidate the historical development of the building and establish the dates of the various phases of construction and alteration. An archaeological framework was developed for dating the fabric of the house and to provide some means of assessing the historical significance of the individual pans of the structure. The findings of the research project were passed on to the project management team who used the infonnation to draw up a conservation strategy for the building. The preparation of this repon marks the final stage in the research project; however it is hoped that the repon will continue to serve as a reference document for the future conservation and management of the building. The fabric analysis and archaeological recording of the building was undertaken by Richard Bond. The documentary research was carried out by Susie Barson. The elevation, section and plan drawings illustrating this report were originated by Alan Fagan following a measured survey of the building which he carried out in 1995. The base drawings were generated on computer and subjected to further enhancement during the course of the EH building recording project. The series of axonometric drawings showing the structural development of the house are by Richard Bond.
