Abstract:
Excavations were carried out adjacent to the south and east walls of the Abbey church in advance of proposed underpinning works. Structural evidence was found for three major phases of construction: the first church built by the Savigniac Order in the 12th century, the rebuilding of the presbytery and chapel by the Cistercians in the 12th-13th century, and the rebuilding of the Presbytery and an extended chapel in the 15th century. A number of monastic burials were excavated within the burial ground that was partially overlain by the 15th century chapel, and a single late burial was found within the presbytery.
