Abstract:
Headland Archaeology (UK) Ltd, undertook a geophysical (magnetometer) survey covering approximately 160 hectares, at East Halton, North Lincolnshire, to inform archaeological mitigation works in advance of the consented construction, by Able UK Ltd, of the Able Logistics Park (ALP). Six areas of clear archaeological activity are identified on or just above the 5m contour line. Four of these areas comprise conjoining clusters of enclosures of varying size and shape, many sub-divided. Individual anomalies identified within the enclosures are indicative of human occupation suggesting that each of these areas comprises a small discrete settlement. Two isolated single enclosures, also with anomalies suggestive of occupational activity, are also identified. The presence of these settlement clusters just above the high-water mark follow a pattern seen from other surveys carried out along this part of the coastline. Towards the eastern edge of the survey area the data is dominated by responses and anomalies indicative of silted up former coastal features, such as creeks and inlets, which were present in this former marginal estuarine environment before drainage and land reclamation. These anomalies continue the pattern previously identified during the survey of the reclaimed marshland immediately to the east. It is possible that the response from archaeological deposits, if present, may be masked by tidal flat deposits and, for this reason, the extent of the archaeological activity may be slightly greater than indicated by the survey. However, it is considered unlikely that any major area of activity would not have been identified. The six areas of archaeological activity are assessed as of high potential with the immediate environs of moderate potential. However, there are still substantial parts of the survey area where no archaeological anomalies are present and these areas are assessed as of moderate to low potential.
