Abstract: |
The proposed development site that is the subject of this evaluation report is located within a 20th-century housing estate on the south side of the village of Broughton, to the south-west of the historic core of the village. It is a short distance from the east of the B1207, which follows the course of the major Roman road of Ermine Street. The site lies approximately 50m from the course of the major Roman road of Ermine Street, and could fall within the zone of any roadside activity. It also lies within the neighbourhood of a probable Bronze Age barrow, although there is less likelihood of prehistoric activity extending into the development area. The previous buildings on the site, dating to the second half of the 20th century, were likely to have disturbed any potential archaeological remains within their footprint. An area of land along the west side of the site lay outside the previously developed area, and archaeological monitoring is took place during the construction of the five dwellings to be built there. This document describes the archaeological methodology and results of the scheme of monitoring and recording. |
