Abstract:
An Archaeological Desk-Based assessment of the Chatteris to Haddenham section of a proposed Anglian Water pipeline undertaken by Archaeological Project Services collated all relevant information contained in the Cambridgshire County Council HER, including that for Scheduled Monuments, known sites, areas of archaeological interventions and listed buildings. Historic maps were also used where appropriate. An aerial photographic assessment of the proposed route was also undertaken. Specific potential for prehistoric remains in the area between Sutton and Chatteris was indentified, where Neolithic and Bronze Age remains, including a significant number of Early Bronze Age round barrows, have been recorded during previous archaeological investigations. Of noteable significance was a newly recognised triple ditch of probable prehistoric date plotted at the western extremity of Wentworth parish during the aerial photographic assessment. Extensive Iron Age and Roman remains occur on the ridge of high ground at Langwood near Chatteris. Potential for the disturbance of Romano-British and Saxon remains occurs in the vicinity of Haddenham Hall in Haddenham. Medieval remains relating to the former manorial complex may also be expected at Hinton, but there is considered to be a low potential for settlement remains of this period elsewhere. However, the frequent occurence of the remains of ploughed out ridge and furrow may be expected, in addition to occasional occurences of earthwork ridge and furrow.
