Abstract:
In December 2013 Archaeology South-East (a division of the Centre for Applied Archaeology, UCL) carried out a programme of historic building recording at Riverside Studios, Crisp Road, Hammersmith, and of the Queen's Wharf office building adjacent, in anticipation of the proposed redevelopment of the existing buildings on the site. Riverside Studios originated in 1920 as Gwynnes' pump factory, which was expanded in 1932 by William Foster and Co. and sold the following year to the Triumph Film Company, marking the start of the site's long association with film and television production. It was adapted for this purpose with the insertion of two film studios and a dubbing theatre, together attendant offices, dressing rooms and technical facilities. The Studios were acquired by the BBC in 1954 as a temporary facility anticipating the construction of nearby Television Centre, and as a test-bed for various technical aspects of that place, particularly lighting and production control. The building was extended on all four sides and its studios variously refitted and expanded, making this the most technologically advanced facility of its type in the world at that time. A number of notable productions followed, such as Dr Who and Z-Cars, until the BBC disposed on the site in 1974. It became an arts and theatre space, and latterly has returned to television production. Adjacent to the Riverside Studios lies Queens wharf, the site of which had been acquired by the engineering firm Rosser and Russell Ltd in 1874. Their factory here was replaced by the present office building in the 1970s.
