Abstract: |
On July 15th, 2019, a metal-detector survey using a pulse-induction metal detector was carried out over the area to be evaluated. Thirty-two objects were recovered, considered to be of a modern agricultural nature. One small rectangular lead plate was recovered, but no marks or inscriptions are visible and it appears to be unmarked. On July 16th,17th and August 7th, 2019, a 7-10% archaeological evaluation was carried out with a 14 ton excavator using a 2m bladed bucket. The potential for archaeological features in the general area is high but the metal detector survey and archaeological evaluation trenching did not reveal any finds or features of archaeological significance. This is perhaps a reflection of the intensity of agricultural activity which has taken place in the project area over at least two and a half centuries, as indicated by the Roy Map below and the subsequent nature of the metal detecting finds. It is therefore recommended that no further archaeological mitigation is deemed necessary during the current planning application. |
