Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken by Cotswold Archaeology between October 2015 and June 2016 at the former HMP Gloucester, Gloucester, Gloucestershire. Fifteen trenches were excavated. The archaeological trenching identified significant deposits and structural remains associated with the medieval Gloucester Castle, including the walls of three sides of the substantial 12th-century keep, an associated forebuilding and part of one of the inner bailey walls. The large inner defensive castle ditch was also identified. The evaluation also encountered structures and deposits relating to the use of the site as the County Gaol in the later medieval/post medieval period, including a number of burials. The extensive well preserved remains of the late 18th-century prison were also identified, as were numerous features and deposits associated with the later development of the site throughout the 19th and 20th century, including the foundations of an early 19th-century treadmill, structures associated with exercise yards and the early 20th-century execution chamber. Four graves of executed prisoners were also encountered. |
