Abstract:
A watching brief monitored groundwork associated with the construction of a garage/workshop and glasshouse at Priory Gardens, Cartmel. The site has already been the focus of archaeological evaluation and small scale excavation and this latest phase of work reconfirmed many of the original findings of that earlier work. Detailed stonework elements were noted in the boundary wall, possibly of 12th to 14th century date, which was presumably reused from the Priory and excavation yielded fragments of industrial residue relating to medieval ironworking or smithing tentatively dated to the 13th to 14th century. The medieval pottery assemblage comprises gritty and sandy wares, yet the relatively low occurrence of later medieval reduced wares and the absence of early post-medieval pottery again hinted at a relative 'lull in activity' at the site from around the 15th century onwards. A medieval midden deposit, which contained abundant animal bone, was also recorded. Post-medieval pottery and glass finds from the site generally dated from the 19th century onwards. The south side of the area revealed a large stone-built structure, which is thought to have been a post-medieval sawpit, which was backfilled in the late 19th or early 20th century before being built over; several structures are marked at that location from the 1890s onwards but its extent most closely corresponds to the west end of a long thin structure shown on the Ordnance Survey map of 1933.
