Abstract: |
An archaeoloigical evaluation was undertaken by Headland Archaeology in December 2013 on land near the western edge of Wednesbury town centre. (NGR SO 39850 295013 (site centre)) A total of 3, 20m evlauation trenches were excavated. Evidence for post medieval activity was identified within the eastern part of the site. A series of brick built wall footings that most probably related to the former Crown Tube Works were identified, as well as an area of demolisihed fire brickcs showing signs of prologned exposer to heat , indicating either a the remains of a furnace base or flue. Towards the western side of the site and within the footings of the previous swimming pool evidence was identified to suggest the possible location of an infilled former resiviour previoulsy identifed on early 19th centuray mappping. No eveidence relating to the location of the Medival town ditch or Medieval activity was obsevered within the area encompassed byt the evaluation trenchs. |
