Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken on March 8th and 9th 2018 by University of Leicester Archaeological Services on behalf of GRM Development solutions on land off Rykneld Road, Littleover, Derby, Derbyshire, in advance of proposed residential development. The investigation represented a follow up to a preliminary archaeological evaluation in the form of 12 geo-technical test pits which provided no evidence for archaeology apart from ridge and furrow and modern pottery. The watching brief confirmed the presence of the ridge and furrow across the site, and suggested 19th century use of the site resulting in spreads and pits containing pottery, charcoal, ceramic building material, glass and animal bone. The evidence also suggested that in the 19th/early 20th century the furrows were partially filled with top soil containing charcoal, pottery and glass in an attempt to level the field. No evidence of Roman settlement, road or mortuary activity was uncovered. |
