Abstract:
In May 2015 Archaeology South-East (a division of the Centre for Applied Archaeology, University College London) carried out a programme of historic building recording in connection with the development of The Former Gala Bingo Hall, 22-30 Richmond Road, Kingston-upon-Thames, Surrey, KT2 5ED (NGR 518310 169648). The work was commissioned by CgMs Consulting to satisfy conditions attached to planning permission (Planning ref: 13/13017/FUL and 13/13018/LBC) for the redevelopment of the site. The building was constructed in 1931 as a 'super cinema' replacing an earlier, smaller, silent cinema in the same location. Towards the end of the 20th century its use as a cinema was dwindling and was subsequently converted into a bingo hall and thus altered internally from its original form. The building's original tea room is currently in use as a separate dance studio, the remaining areas of the building are currently redundant. The building was Grade II Listed in 1993 (Listed Building No.1253350) as an 'early and well-preserved example of an Art Deco cinema from the 1930s, and a good, rare example of the work of a major cinema architect, Robert Cromie'.
