Abstract: |
In October 2016 Archaeology South-East (a division of the Centre for Applied Archaeology, UCL) carried out a historic buildings record at Howe Barracks, Littlebourne Road, Canterbury, Kent CT1 1TD (NGR TR 164 579). The work was commissioned by CgMs Consulting and requested by Kent County Council, to be addressed as a condition placed on planning consent relating to the redevelopment of the site for up to 500 dwellings, together with associated infrastructure, landscaping and access (Planning ref: CA//14/01230). Howe Barracks was established in Canterbury in 1938, in response to the impending threat of war with Germany. Constructed on the site of a post-medieval deer park and farm, the first permanent buildings on the site had been erected by 1942, centred around the large Sandhurst Block facing onto Littlebourne Road, which was damaged by enemy bombing. Following peacetime demobilisation and wide-scale reorganisation of the British Army, Howe Barracks was chosen as a regional training centre and was to benefit from a period of investment and modernisation during the 1960s. A number of new buildings were constructed, and the existing bomb-damaged Sandhurst Block repaired. Additional accommodation was provided during the 1980s, and some of the earlier buildings adapted or demolished. With the decline of Canterbury's military importance, the barracks was closed in 2014. |
