Abstract: |
Results of a desk-based assessment, walkover survey and historic visual impact assessment carried out by South West Archaeology Ltd. on land at Back Lane, Aughton, Lancashire as part of the pre-planning documentation for a proposed solar farm. The proposed solar farm would be located within three medium sized, irregularly shaped fields south-west of Walsh Hall. The Manor of Walsh Hall is first documented in the 13th century, and was held by the Walsh family into the later 17th century. The current shape and form of these fields has been determined by arable utility. The walkover failed to identify any features of archaeological interest. Undesignated heritage assets in the immediate area relate to the post-medieval farming landscape; the area was under-utilised in the later Prehistoric and Romano-British periods, but earlier Prehistoric activity took place in (former) fen-edge areas. Crop- and soilmarks of natural and anthropogenic origin extent across the western boundary of the site, but are difficult to interpret. |
