Abstract: |
In September 2016 Archaeological Solutions Ltd (AS) carried out historic building recording at Helpestons Manor, Hollow Road, Felsted, Essex (NGR: TL 70741 20152). It is proposed to extend and alter the current dwelling, convert the listed barn to domestic use and erect a link extension between barn and dwelling, erect a garden shed and a cartlodge. The recording was carried out as a requirement of a planning condition on approval for the development (Uttlesford Planning Ref. UTT/12/5539/FUL). The farm house is of early to mid-19th century date but retains little of intrinsic historic interest, having been refurbished extensively in the past. The only feature of note is a repositioned stone screen from a London church, which is of mid-19th century date and has been reutilised as a decorative feature. Analysis confirmed the list description of the barn as of probable 16th century date. This can be refined on the basis of carpentry and construction to the latter part of the century, and possibly into the early 17th century. The granary floor and staircase are probably secondary insertions, but of broadly contemporary date. The building uses much recycled timber from a medieval building, and has suffered little physical alteration since its creation. |
