Abstract:
Archaeological Desk-Based Assessment at Land to the North of Airport Road, Hengrove, Bristol. Historically, the study area lay entirely within the county of Somerset, mostly in the parish of Brislington, with its western corner in Whitchurch, previously known as Felton or Filton. It was bordered along the length of its northern edge by the ancient ecclesiastical parish of Bedminster. The study area was part of the estate and lands of Hengrove, which was extremely rural until its rapid urbanisation and incorporation into Bristol City between the 1930s-70s. There is a noticeable Romano-British presence in the area, such as a small late 1st to early 4th century farming community centred on Filwood Park, 400m to the west of the site, and a large number of isolated Romano-British finds in the wider area. Several 18th and 19th century fieldnames very close to the site could be indicative of historic human activity. Wheeler's Wood, close to the north-west of the site, may derive from OE hwēol, 'land containing a stone circle', and is located only 100m north of a ringed enclosure seen on aerial photographs. Weeks almost certainly derives from OE wīc, 'specialised farm or trading place', and the three Weeks fields are clustered just to the south-west of the site. No pre-urbanised aerial photographs or LIDAR are available for the site. A site visit indicated that the southern edge has been banked with spoil from the creation of Airport Road. There is no suggestion that the site has ever been developed.
