Abstract: |
Between the 21st and the 31st of October, Oxford Archaeology undertook a trial trench evaluation at Sketchley Lane, Sketchley, Leicestershire. The work was undertaken to inform a planning application for a mixed commercial and residential development. A total of 56 trenches were excavated across the site targeting the results of a geophysical survey. The geophysical survey identified activity associated with the agricultural use of the site including areas of plough furrow. The trial trenching identified a series of linear features and postholes that can be associated with medieval and post-medieval agricultural activity within the site. A sherd of Samian ware dating to the 2nd century AD was recovered from a ditch in the southern part of the site. However, the sherd is not considered indicative of the date of the feature and is probably a residual find. No anomalies identified by the geophysical survey were identified within the trenches except those associated with extant and ploughed out ridge and furrow. |
