Abstract:
An archaeological watching brief at Pets' Corner, Leicester Abbey, Abbey Park, Leicester was undertaken by the University of Leicester Archaeological Services (ULAS) between the 1st and 10th of May 2019. The watching brief at the Scheduled site took place during the replacement of a fence and gates in the north-west corner of the former abbey grounds. The work entailed the installation of two new gates and approximately 80m of replacement fencing requiring the excavation of new post holes. Inspection of the 0.75m deep post holes revealed a homogenous upper layer of mixed clay topsoil covering a disturbed sandy or clay and gravel layer in most cases. Other holes contained modern concrete and other modern disturbance. No archaeological artefacts were recovered from the spoil. The report and archive will be deposited under Accession Number Y.A11.2019
