Abstract:
Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by R.V. Dart and Sons (Builders) Ltd, on behalf of Hampshire County Council, to undertake an archaeological watching brief on land at Tile Barn Outdoor Centre, Church Lane, Brockenhurst, Hampshire, SO51 7JF (NGR 430395, 101491). The Site is proposed for the construction of 20 accommodation pods with a hub building, two toilet blocks, and the creation of an access track. A planning application (New Forest National Park Authority) had been submitted and an archaeological condition (Condition 5) was placed on the approved notice. The archaeological watching brief revealed no definitive archaeological features or deposits, and the Site showed signs of landscaping in some areas. A feature identified at the eastern end of the Site could relate to the field hospital that was situated there during World War One. A metal detecting survey on the proposed excavation areas identified a total of 220 objects, with 17 being of note. The watching brief was carried out between the 27th of April to the 15th of May 2015.
