Abstract:
In November 2016 and October 2017 Archaeology South-East (a division of the Centre for Applied Archaeology, UCL) carried out a programme of historic building recording on a series of Second World War structures on the western edge of the River Adur (Reach W7), prior to the commencement of the Adur Tidal Walls flood defence scheme. Reach W7 is just one of a number of areas on the east and west bank of the Adur within the overall Adur Tidal Walls scheme. The 14 structures recorded here, located where the river bank converges with the perimeter of Shoreham Airport, Shoreham-by-Sea, form only a part of the wider system of defence and airfield administration put in place from 1939, as well as being part of the defensive line along the River Adur. Preceding this phase of work, an evaluation was undertaken in 2015 (ASE project 6833) which contains information directly relevant to the current work. The recording took place in November 2016 and October 2017 and the impact upon the structures by the defence scheme varies: minimal impact from landscaping of the surrounding area, preservation on situ by burial within the flood defence bank and finally to demolition and removal of a few of the structures.
